{"id":101076,"date":"2020-07-10T06:31:41","date_gmt":"2020-07-10T06:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/?p=101076"},"modified":"2020-07-10T06:31:41","modified_gmt":"2020-07-10T06:31:41","slug":"younger-workers-most-vulnerable-to-job-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/younger-workers-most-vulnerable-to-job-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Younger workers most vulnerable to job cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pandemic-and-youth.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"318\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-101077\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pandemic-and-youth.png 333w, https:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pandemic-and-youth-300x286.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/>Analysis by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) shows younger workers are three times more likely to work in sectors most vulnerable to job cuts, including hospitality and the arts.<\/p>\n<p>And women under 25 are most at risk of finding themselves out of a job as the UK emerges from lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation, which has more than 50 affiliated trade unions, studied the rate of furloughed workers, the proportion of businesses that have paused or cancelled trading, and the proportion of businesses with turnover falling more than 50% in each sector.<\/p>\n<p>It found those working in \u2018accommodation and food\u2019 and \u2018arts, entertainment and recreation\u2019 were in a \u201cleague of their own\u201d in terms of vulnerability to a surge in unemployment, with rates far exceeding the construction industry in third place. <\/p>\n<p>The TUC said the number of job vacancies have already fallen by a quarter compared to the same period last year and has called for the government to put in place a job guarantee scheme, with early access for younger workers.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to the government\u2019s Future Jobs Fund, which offers subsidised employment for young people at a disadvantage in the labour market, the scheme would see employers helped to create more vacancies of at least six months, paying the higher &#8216;real&#8217; living wage and offering training opportunities to help people secure longer-term work. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politicshome.com\/news\/article\/uk-on-the-brink-of-youth-unemployment-crisis-union-chiefs-warn\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Analysis by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) shows younger workers are three times more likely to work in sectors most vulnerable to job cuts, including hospitality and the arts.
