Studies like this are part of growing evidence that, in this country, mental health has become one of the most pressing issues facing young people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As further evidence of these issues comes to light we are also beginning to hear discussion amongst educators and policy makers on how to address this rising epidemic. Much of this discussion has included a growing recognition of the importance of resilience in young people to combat mental health problems.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/what.jpg\" alt=\"Resilience\" width=\"300\" height=\"124\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3537\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Resilience is a term common in biology and environmental conservation; It is the ability of an ecosystem to withstand external \u201cshocks\u201d. As with an organism, if a person has resilience they will be better equipped to withstand setbacks and challenges. Early development is peppered with these challenges as young people navigate milestones like starting high school, taking exams and entering the workplace. The ability to learn and grow from our ups and downs are incredibly important as we move into adulthood. If we are able to bounce back from these setbacks we will be both, happier and healthier in the short term and better prepared for adulthood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So what can we do to increase resilience? The good news is that resilience is a skill that can be learned. Governments are actively beginning to include mental health strategies in school curriculums. Mindfulness for example has been introduced and is taught and practised alongside Maths and English. Girlguiding has introduced a programme called Think Resilient, a guided self help course that aims to help young women build personal resilience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other elements of resilience can be tricky to teach and are often linked to external factors. As we grow up factors beyond a young persons control play a part in building resilience; including our relationships, support networks and the interventions available to us. Barnardos names four main factors in increasing resilience in young people;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Development of individual skills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Availability of suitable\/relevant\/expert services and resources when they are needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tackling the wider determinants of unequal health outcomes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Because these factors are unequally distributed, intervention targeting vulnerable young people is particularly important. As well as helping young people build their own resilience, there is also a need to ensure they grow up in an environment that gives them the right tools at the right time.
