{"id":3020,"date":"2015-02-17T14:47:56","date_gmt":"2015-02-17T14:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/?p=3020"},"modified":"2023-07-11T15:22:15","modified_gmt":"2023-07-11T15:22:15","slug":"100000s-young-people-left-behind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/100000s-young-people-left-behind\/","title":{"rendered":"100,000s young people left behind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Long-term youth unemployment is a national disgrace that can leave a life-time scar.&#8221; The words of one of the UK&#8217;s most influential businessman, director general of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) John Cridland.<br \/>\nHe said parents, teachers and businesses must take responsibility for tackling the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Figures from the ONS show there are 188,000 18 to 24-year-olds who&#8217;ve been unemployed for more than 12 months. While that figure is down 10% in four years it is still lagging behind the fall in long-term unemployment across all other ages &#8211; down nearly 25% over the same period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not enough jobs<\/strong><br \/>\nMatty Finnigan, 23, from Lowestoft has been unemployed for around three years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsbeat\/31446918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3021\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/youth-unemployment.jpg\" alt=\"youth unemployment\" width=\"294\" height=\"229\" data-id=\"3021\" \/><\/a> He&#8217;s had money worries, suffered from anxiety and lost confidence because of it.<br \/>\nBut he has managed to turn himself around in the last few months after going to charity Tomorrow&#8217;s People for help.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There [aren&#8217;t] enough jobs to go around,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everybody is fighting for the same job and if you haven&#8217;t got qualifications or even experience you&#8217;re always going to be looked over.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So some people do find it harder to get a job than other people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s definitely depressing, it takes a toll on your self-esteem, confidence and motivation but you have to get to a point where you have to push forward&#8230;
