Navigating life is often trickier than winning in a game<\/em>–this thought lingers in my mind during countless restless nights. At least games offer strategies, yet life doesn’t come with a manual. It seems at each stage; we encounter troubles; as we conquer one obstacle, another swiftly emerges. Each phase assures endless concerns, much like my pursuit of that elusive “first” paid internship. In this pursuit, anxiety and puzzlement often cloud my thoughts.<\/p>\n

The saying “the hardest part is the start” holds, especially when accumulating experience before formal employment–a customary part of securing internships. Indeed, jobs similarly demand experience. However, the internships I seek carry high expectations, and even the unpaid positions set an unrealistic bar for interns–I realise that others often surpass my qualifications when submitting my resume. The reason is straightforward: they possess relevant experience.<\/p>\n

But how do we, as young individuals, ensure readiness for employment? How do we acquire the necessary skills, experience, and knowledge? How do we showcase our potential?<\/p>\n

With these questions in mind, I halted the resume-sending spree and redirected my focus towards something else — volunteering.<\/p>\n

Why should you turn to volunteer?<\/h2>\n

From the youth’s perspectives:<\/h3>\n

Becoming a volunteer can offer far more than you might imagine.<\/strong> Here are some reasons why volunteer activities can significantly benefit your job hunt:<\/p>\n

  1. Diverse Volunteer Positions:<\/strong> There’s a wide array of volunteer roles available! You might discover a position that perfectly aligns with your expertise and allows you to shine.<\/li>\n
  2. Networking Opportunity:<\/strong> Volunteering is a chance to interact with various people\u2014from elders to youths\u2014with diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives. Engage in conversations, broaden your horizons, and perhaps receive valuable advice!<\/li>\n
  3. Training Opportunities:<\/strong> Many volunteer roles provide comprehensive on-the-job training, allowing for rapid development of various skills.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Most volunteer positions don’t demand extensive prerequisites; they only require a bit of your time. Ultimately, it’s up to you! Whether you’re assisting in a charity shop or serving as an event helper, each role can make you feel incredibly helpful and shine brightly.<\/p>\n

    From employers’ perspectives:<\/h3>\n

    Employers highly value volunteer experiences<\/strong>. Tetwejer (2021) suggests that volunteers primarily acquire practical and industry-specific knowledge during their activities. The indicated skills encompass group collaboration, interpersonal abilities, and effective communication. The attitudes cultivated through volunteering include resourcefulness, responsibility, sensitivity, and empathy. The research compares the competencies acquired through volunteering with those desired by employers, identifying a potential gap. The findings imply that communication skills, openness, teamwork, and industry knowledge are expected competencies in an ideal job candidate, often presenting a gap that volunteering can bridge. This suggests both job seekers and employers view volunteering as a means to enhance prospects in the labour market.<\/p>\n

    Furthermore, Spera et al.<\/em> (2015) also found a strong and consistent correlation between volunteering and securing employment. In the following year, after experiencing unemployment, individuals who engaged in volunteering had a 27% increased chance of obtaining employment compared to those who did not participate in volunteer work<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    All in all, becoming a volunteer stands as one of the most empowering opportunities for young individuals. When feeling lost, consider expanding your horizons and exploring alternative avenues. This is something I’ve experienced firsthand \u2013 my anxiety and uncertainty notably diminished after volunteering. Whether engaging in face-to-face conversations or simply focusing on tasks, volunteering offers a pressure-free environment without KPIs or obligatory duties, allowing undivided focus on self-development. It’s a precious time in my week, and remarkably, I’ve found a way to contribute to charity while seeking my path.<\/p>\n

    How to find opportunities:<\/h2>\n

    Having said that, where can one find volunteer opportunities? Here are a few channels:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Volunteer with us<\/a>:<\/strong> We are looking for volunteers of all ages and experience to join our team and help us continue our work.<\/li>\n
    2. Charity job<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0This website consolidates diverse volunteer opportunities, including remote positions. You might stumble upon surprising options by using specific keywords in your search!<\/li>\n
    3. LinkedIn:<\/strong> Many non-profit organisations post opportunities here. Experiment with filters, selecting roles as “volunteer” or directly searching for volunteer opportunities. Note: Some roles may have high requirements, but plenty of other openings also exist.<\/li>\n
    4. Official websites of charitable organisations:<\/strong> Click on sections like “involve” or “how I can help.” You might find a volunteer option tailored to your interests. Applying directly through official websites can often be more efficient.<\/li>\n
    5. Direct searches using search engines:<\/strong> Sometimes, this method uncovers opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked. Keep changing the keyword, and there’s always a chance you’ll find a perfect match for you!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      In our pursuit of humility and self-enrichment, we may discover that volunteer activities provide us with enriching experiences and open up new possibilities in our lives. Life might not come with a playbook, but we may discover something close to a guide within volunteerism, steering us towards a more enriched and purposeful journey.
