Hair seems to continuously fall as I glance at the floor, forever littered with strands. Nights grow restless, anxiety weaving a web that keeps sleep at bay. Days unfold monotonously, unchanging and stifling. My inbox becomes a constant refresh, awaiting that pivotal internship email or news from the school&#8217;s systems as anxiety steadily builds. Time feels fleeting, as if never enough. Do these echoes of experience resonate within our generation? The majority of mental health issues emerge during the early stages of life, with around 75% of lifetime mental disorders beginning before reaching 25 years of age. This encompasses various conditions, such as psychotic disorders, depression, and anxiety. Consequently, these youths, ages between 18 to 25, are within the age range where the likelihood of experiencing mental health challenges is notably elevated (Brown, 2018).<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, this age group often faces various pressures and anxieties stemming from diverse reasons. Here, I&#8217;d like to primarily delve into the uncertainty about future employment, much like the experience I mentioned earlier. I believe this is something most individuals undergo, feeling equally overwhelmed and at a loss.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the pressure surrounding work has become a chronic condition, affecting today&#8217;s young people&#8217;s personal performance and overall well-being (Kohli, 2022). The causes of work-related stress are numerous, including intense competition, unsupportive colleagues, and a lack of job security. Young individuals often fear missing out on job opportunities and struggling in the job market.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The increasing &#8216;rat race&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>I once watched a video from an HR professional where he mentioned that some interviewees seek feedback, wanting to know how they could improve. However, the reality is that everyone is already great, and there seems to be little to be done. The pool of players in this job-seeking game is vast, each person unique in their own way. Falling short isn&#8217;t due to lack of ability but because this game, which is already so competitive, keeps getting more intense. That is where the \u2018rat race\u2019 is happening. Just like the rejection I received from Pulse, \u2018<em>While we were impressed with your skills and experience, we had to make some difficult decisions, and unfortunately, we won&#8217;t be moving forward with your application at this time. Here is something I used to do to deal with my anxiety and stress. I hope this can help you to overcome your hard time a little bit.<\/p>\n<p>These are all drawn from my personal experiences:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Stop blanket-applying with your resume.<\/strong> Elevate your standards for internships and seek the ones that fit you best. Check for new internship listings on different platforms daily. Remember, your time is not cheap, and not just any internship should take up your time. It&#8217;s a mutual selection process. Elevating standards to find the most relevant internship in your field is crucial.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conduct thorough background checks on companies before applying for internships.<\/strong> Many opportunities can be deceptive, some exaggerated, others outright scams. Before deciding to apply, it&#8217;s best to Google the company for work reviews. If it&#8217;s a smaller company like a startup and you can&#8217;t find reviews, you can still apply, but if something feels off, it&#8217;s okay not to proceed.<\/li>\n<li>After completing the above, congratulations! You&#8217;ve likely found a more reliable internship opportunity! The time spent on these steps will also help ease some anxiety. Now it&#8217;s time to <strong>wait for responses<\/strong>, which can be the most unbearable part. During this period, diverting attention helps. I usually focus on my studies, striving to meet my weekly learning plans and goals.<\/li>\n<li>Not interested in returning to studies? No problem, <strong>there are plenty of activities to engage in<\/strong>. Have a walk, meet friends, read, watch a series, or take a break. Maintaining good habits and a healthy lifestyle can be very uplifting!<\/li>\n<li>Feeling overwhelmed due to internship anxieties? <strong>Take this opportunity to plan your career path.<\/strong> Consider the direction you&#8217;d like to take in the future. Having clear goals will also give you something to discuss in future interviews.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is everything I want to share with fellow university students like myself.
