{"id":92065,"date":"2019-06-06T10:15:11","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T10:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/?p=92065"},"modified":"2023-07-11T15:19:38","modified_gmt":"2023-07-11T15:19:38","slug":"high-rents-make-young-people-less-mobile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/high-rents-make-young-people-less-mobile\/","title":{"rendered":"High Rents Make Young People Less Mobile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rising rents mean young people are less likely to move to UK cities where average salaries are higher, a report indicates.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tesyouth.org\/t\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Rising-rents.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-92071\" \/>The number of young people in private rented accommodation who moved for a new job has almost halved in 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the higher wages available, financial incentives for moving are lower, say researchers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pay gains are being swallowed up by high housing costs,&#8221; said Lindsay Judge of the Resolution Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For young people in particular, there are real advantages to moving when it comes to trying new roles and developing skills &#8211; and housing should not be a barrier that prevents them doing this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Although unemployment has fallen, the Resolution Foundation found that rents had climbed the fastest in higher-paying areas of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Private rents have risen by almost 90% in the UK&#8217;s highest-paying local authority areas, while rents have increased by just over 70% among the lowest-paying local authority areas.<\/p>\n<p>In 1997, after housing costs were deducted from salaries, private renters moving from a low-paying area such as East Devon to a mid-paying area such as Bristol would have received an average financial gain of about 16%.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the financial gain would be a mere 1%.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, millennials and the so-called &#8220;Generation Z&#8221; have other reasons for not moving apart from money.<\/p>\n<p>Some people prefer to live near to their parents and friends, while others might find it harder to relocate because of their children<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-48533109\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rising rents mean young people are less likely to move to UK cities where average salaries are higher, a report indicates.
