The Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) has found that there has been an 8% reduction in jobs available for new graduates in a survey of ‘more than 200 top employees.’ In 2015 there was a 13.2% increase in graduate schemes from 2014. A report by the National Audit Office (NAO) says the government’s plans for three million new apprenticeships in England by 2020 should be honed to meet skills gaps. The focus should be less on how many apprenticeships are created and more on which sector needs them, it adds. A minister said employers are creating training places to meet their needs. According to a report by the charity EY Foundation more than a quarter of young people in many UK cities are unemployed, potentially undermining efforts to bring about “inclusive growth” following Brexit. The report says “stark variations” in youth unemployment levels across the UK could have a knock-on effect on local economic growth.
