Increasing numbers of pupils are coming to school hungry, anxious and unable to concentrate because of family financial pressures, a teachers’ union has said. The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) said growing numbers of teachers and schools were providing food, equipment and clothes for pupils. According to the OECD’s Adult Skills Report, England and the USA are ranking in the bottom three of the 24 countries surveyed for literacy and numeracy among 16-25 year olds.
