When applying for roles, we are often told that the workplace is a fun and friendly environment to be a part of. However, this is not always the case. “Recent studies have shown that workplace bullying is on the rise. Research has proven that almost 75% of employees surveyed had been affected by workplace bullying.” As a result, it is clear to see that workplace bullying is a major issue and must be addressed, reduced and even prevented.
So what are five ways to prevent bullying in the workplace?
Policies and procedures. Make sure to maintain a policy that prohibits any form of bullying in the workplace and that all employees follow it with disciplinary actions in place. Furthermore, ensure there is an efficient complaint system for bullying when it does occur with a prompt, impartial and thorough investigation of complaints. With these policies and procedures, bullying can be prevented.
Encourage zero tolerance toward bullying. Companies often have policies and procedures in place in relation to bullying. But sometimes simple measures make a lot of difference. By putting this method in place, employees know that bullying is not acceptable. As a result, they will be less likely to bully others and will prevent bullying in the workplace.
Train employees and supervisors about bullying. It is important for everyone in the company to understand the issue in order to prevent it. By providing this training, colleagues are able to learn ways to identify bullying, fairly investigate claims, maintain privacy and find ways to prevent the issue from occurring in the future.
Make the workplace a positive environment. By making the workplace a positive environment, employees are less likely to participate in negative thoughts and actions towards others. Additionally, If employees are happy, they are more likely to be focused on their tasks instead of focusing on other colleagues.as a result, a positive working environment prevents bullying.
Ensure the workplace is inclusive to all. In an increasingly diverse world, many employees come from different backgrounds or have needs and disabilities that should be respected within the company. By providing an inclusive environment with welcoming colleagues, it will prevent bullying by ensuring everyone is respected regardless of their differences.
It is clear to see that there are several ways to prevent bullying in the workplace. With these measures in place, you will make sure employees are happy and make them and your company more successful.
