All self-employed tutors should be legally required to have a criminal records check before they can offer private lessons to children in the UK, children’s charity the NSPCC says. A current loophole means self-employed tutors do not have to undergo Disclosure and Barring Service checks. The NSPCC says this loophole creates an “ideal scenario” for “any predatory adult seeking to harm children”. The Home Office said it would “carefully consider” the comments. There are warnings from Ofsted that further education providers are “falling short in protecting learners from risk of extremism”. The education watchdog has been examining how well colleges implement the Prevent counter-extremism strategy. In one case, inspectors said a student had watched a “terrorist propaganda video” in a resource centre. About 20,000 vocational courses are being changed ‘between academic and technical options’; the technical courses will be targeted at a specific occupation and teach common math, English and digital skills.
