Internships give valuable work experience and an insight into the company you are interested in working. Lots of big companies now offer summer internships to graduates and university students. Employment 4 students have compiled a list of the top internships for university students.

What can you do if you are not studying in university?

There are a number of charities and companies which now offer long-term internships for young people, 17 to 25-year-olds.

Listed below are three programmes that offer a tonne of work experience, opportunities to gain new transferable skills, learn about a new industry and a chance to make new friends and connections.

Want to work and gain a qualification at the same time?

Step Forward is a year-long apprenticeship scheme in London that connects motivated young people with top employers.  The scheme offers a  paid job with a quality employer for 12 months for young people, aged 17-20 in London. Run by leading national charity, The Challenge, the scheme is free for all young people.

They currently offer schemes in the following sectors: Accounting and Business, Early Years Education, Hospitality, IT and Software,  and Digital Marketing. Find more information on their website.

Want to become the next leader? Interested in politics and the environment?

UpRising offers both short 2 weeks and long-term internship programmes for 18 to 25-year-olds.

Fastlaners is an eight-day programme for 18-25-year-olds who are looking to kick start their career.  The programme is designed to build confidence and knowledge, introduce participants to a range of potential employers and develop the skills needed to get that dream job. Find more information on their website.

Uprising Leadership programmes last nine months and are part time. The programmes involve ‘access behind the scenes’ sessions with some of the UK’s most senior leaders. Find more information on their website.

Do you want to spend time in schools instead, helping and teaching children?

City Year UK challenges young people to tackle educational inequality through a year of full-time volunteering in schools.

By giving a year of your time and experience you’ll help create an environment where children from disadvantaged communities can enjoy school, feel confident and achieve their potential. It also helps build your own sense of leadership, developing skills in problem-solving, public speaking, decision-making and communication.

Volunteers are supported during the year with living expenses and training so that you can concentrate on your work. Find more information on their website.

Want to gain Work and Organisational experience?
